Sleep has amazing benefits and most of us don’t get enough of it! It is essential for weight loss, diabetes prevention, immune system support and so many more things. There are different stages to sleep, the most important one being our deep REM sleep, which should be happening every 70-90 minutes. In our REM sleep, we secrete a massive amount (50%) of our growth hormones during the 3rd and 4th stage of REM. These growth hormones are so important because they help our body function optimally. The top 3 beneficial things that growth hormones affect are:

  1. Weight Loss: Promotes lipolysis is the breakdown of fat. If fat is not broken down, then our bodies cannot burn it and get rid of it as easily.
  2. Diabetes Prevention- These hormones promote gluconeogenesis in the liver- which promotes healthy blood sugar levels. And they also contribute to the maintenance and function of the pancreas, which helps combat diabetes.
  3. Immune system- Stimulates the immune system. Not only does this mean that you will have a lesser chance of colds and flu, but a lesser chance of cancer due to the immune system being strong enough to fight cancer cells!

Sleep has more benefits than those listed, but just those 3 benefits shows the IMPORTANCE of getting a good night sleep! If you have trouble sleeping there are numerous things that you can do to get your body relaxed enough to sleep. Try getting your body into a schedule for what time you go to bed and the time you wake up, use calming essential oils like lavender, drink chamomile tea 30 minutes before bedtime, or meditate before bed to get your body into a relaxed state.

If you are still having trouble sleeping, try doing some of these things! Check and see if it is time for you to get a new bed, make sure you do not use your phone, computer, or tv for 30 minutes before bed, try taking supplements like melatonin, Valerian root, 5-HTP, Magnesium, or Theanine, and if all else fails try unplugging all electronics in your room as sometimes the electromagnetic field may interfere with your sleep!

Getting a good night sleep will not only energize you for your day ahead, it will energize you for your life ahead.
